Character Name: Chesnaught
Species: Chesnaught (Pokemon)
Canon: Pokemon X (PSS AU)
Canon Point: Post-game and beyond, well into the thick of competitive play
History: Every journey comes with its own humble beginning. For Chesnaught, it was being hatched into the care of a well-respected scientist in his home region of Kalos, and with his earliest days spent in humble assistance to his research; but, as a Chespin, he would soon find himself becoming the start of another person's journey: Chesnaught would be the first Pokemon of the young trainer who would eventually become known as the Kalos region's champion.
But, to Chesnaught- and everyone else in the region, for that matter- he was simply known as "Peepo."
Theirs was a partnership that felt nothing short of natural- in fact, before they'd even had their first battle, it had felt less like a first meeting and more like a twelfth!- and soon they were off on their Pokemon journey. ...Or they would have been, but Peepo insisted on spending the day in rigorous training first. As a little Chespin, Chesnaught was hitting punching bags until his arms felt like they were falling off, but in the end it was worth it; Peepo may not have talked with him much, but Chesnaught could overhear something about how his efforts were valued, so clearly their bond was only growing stronger! Soon they would be on their way yet again, and- with the aid of a newly-caught Fletchling Peepo named 'HotWingz'- the two of them soon bested their first gym together.
With the frenzied pace kept by his trainer, their journey across Kalos was something of a high-speed whirlwind tour that left little time to take in the local flavor. In Cyllage city, Chesnaught- having evolved to a Quilladin- took center stage breaking through the local rock-type gym almost singlehandedly; In Shalour, his team earned a swift victory with the aid of their newfound allies, the ghost-sword Honedge (whom Peepo named 'Edgelord') and a Ralts (soon given the name 'Rule 34'), unlocking the secrets of Mega Evolution as an encore; and, with their team's roster bolstered, they quickly cleared through Coumarine City's gym as well.
There... was actually quite a lot starting to unfold by then, but Chesnaught- now, at long last, at full strength as a mighty Chesnaught- had a difficult time keeping up with it all. The fashionable-yet-foul Team Flare was causing trouble all across Kalos, menacing scientists and stealing power, and... something about the legendary Pokemon Xerneas and an ancient weapon...? To be honest, Chesnaught could barely follow any of it, especially with how Peepo would always push people through conversation so quickly. But there was that exciting battle against Xerneas, where a lone Chesnaught stood protecting his trainer from a powerful, ancient force... only to have the whole confrontation brought to an end before he could throw a single punch, thanks to some fancy new Pokeball.
Peepo's friends helped him out, too, though Chesnaught wasn't sure why Peepo seemed to hate seeing his friendly rival Serena so much. Then again, Peepo always did seem to be in a hurry; Chesnaught never really understood why.
Together, Peepo, Chesnaught, and the rest of the team quickly cut their way through the rest of Kalos to square off against the Elite Four and the champion: The movie star Diantha. It was a magnificent performance from everyone involved, and truly a battle to behold; but, in the end, Peepo took his place as the Kalos champion- as well as a hero to the region, after all that stuff involving Team Flare. (When he saw there was even a parade and everything, Chesnaught was especially embarrassed that he couldn't follow what was going on back then under Geosenge...)
With Peepo now in the champion's seat, what followed amounted to an extended vacation in Kiloude City... peppered with frequent battles with other up-and-coming trainers, of course, many of which even looked unsettlingly similar to Peepo or Serena. But the champion's team of Chesnaught, Hotwingz, Rule 34, and Edgelord always had at least a fine showing... especially with their two new teammates, a Rotom named 'Git Gud' and an Excadrill named 'SpinningRims'. Their battles came with their share of losses, too, but Chesnaught was always ready at the forefront when the fighting began. ...Even if he would usually crumple after a few hits from a foe's flying-type Pokemon.
But, after weeks of battle, something changed. While he didn't quite understand what it meant, his trainer had, apparently, 'met a gameshift.' He still wasn't sure what a gameshift was or why it was so important, but it did mean he was given a break from battling for a while and could watch the brawls from the sidelines while Peepo tried out some of the other Pokemon in his collection. Not that he minded; it was relaxing to step back from the fighting once in a while and exciting to watch Thunderbutt, Burgertime, Donglord, U Mad Son, Dave, and BAMGetDunked get a chance to strut their stuff! But, all the same, he was spending less and less time on Peepo's team, and was- admittedly- getting a little bit restless from sitting around all the time.
Peepo must have understood this, because it wasn't long before Chesnaught would soon be facing a new adventure. After all, every champion passes the torch sooner or later, and that 'Wonder Trade' thing Peepo approached would just make sure he found his way to someone who needed him even more, right?
Personality: Having had the incredible fortune of being reared and raised under the kind care of one Augustine Sycamore as a Chespin, Chesnaught developed not only a sense of comfort and familiarity around humans- often even in the case of complete strangers- but furthermore a resolutely positive outlook toward life in general, to say nothing of one's partnership with humans. Unfortunately, this optimism carries a particularly sharp double edge that's left him perhaps a bit too trusting; a trait which, combined with his only passing knowledge of human culture, can often manifest as unchecked naivety. To whit, he's still completely oblivious to the fact that his hand-off into Wondertrade likely meant he was being cast aside to try and get something better; after all, being traded just means you're being given who needs you even more, right?
True to his kind's sheltering and protective nature, Chesnaught is softhearted to the point of being a six-foot-tall, bulletproof pushover, to the point where fake tears and puppy eyes have dragged him into more personal favors and heavy lifting than he can count, to say nothing of those times they drew him into being sucker-punched in battle. Curiously, while he's loath to fight or even bear witness to one, he's surprisingly fond of battling; after all, a fight is all about anger and animosity, but a battle is like a sport: a friendly contest of strength and skill between two fighters (or two teams) who are both trying to get better! His rosy-tinted view on Pokemon battles aside, fighting is hardly in his nature; If anything, Chesnaught is more than a little bit conflict-averse, and has made a habit of appeasement as his usual way out of those terrible spots where tempers start to run hot, even if his incredible resilience more would most often leave him with little to fear.
In many ways, Chesnaught is most strongly motivated not by his role as a battling Pokemon but by his contribution as a part of something that he thought wanted and needed him; In that same vein, he enjoys being able to impress others, in no small part due to his own awareness of his shortcomings; most of his former teammates could run circles around him mentally, and he was at such a disadvantage against flying opponents that even mundane birds have a tendency to put him on edge. However, this humility and desire for approval does not stem from a brittle ego so much as a deep-seated sense of gratitude. He sees himself as the recipient of a great deal of kindness and good fortune, which he in turn is eager to pay back in helping others himself; a rule which he has taken as the norm for human interactions.
We should all be so lucky.
Abilities, Powers, Afflictions:
•Bulletproof: As a Chesnaught, Chesnaught possesses not only incredible endurance but also the defensive capacity- owed in no small part to his large, spiked shell- to withstand intense punishment and, in some cases, even the likes of bullets and grenades-- or, at least the equivalent he would face off against in his Pokemon battles.
•Spikes: The robust spikes growing from Chesnaught's shell and forearms are often put to use in various ways while battling; most often they're either used as a sort of shield to block and punish attackers, or scattered across the ground to deter would-be opponents from picking fights with him. (For the Pokemon fans, this is Spikes and Spiky Shield)
•Fighting Type: Like the rest of his kind, both brawn and fighting instinct come naturally to Chesnaught, and he makes use of both in fending off his enemies. One of his most noteworthy and unusual abilities is a mighty punch that leeches the stamina away from his struck opponents. (Drain Punch)
•Grass Type: Despite his mammalian looks, Chesnaught has some unusual characteristics more typically befitting a plant; most notably, in the presence of sunlight, he has some capacity to regrow himself and mend his own injuries. (Synthesis)
•Sociable: Chesnaught can talk. Whodathunkit?
Path Preference:
•Chivalry's focus on action and physical strength makes for the sort of job Chesnaught is already well-accustomed to filling; the fact that the tasks so often coinside with protecting others only makes it an even better fit. Coupled with his natural gifts for shielding, endurance, and even flat-out recovering his own health and stamina, he would make for walking, amicable, and nearly-impenetrable bulwark.
•Diplomacy, on the other hand, may make for an appealing option as well. There's no denying that Chesnaught may not be the sharpest tool in the shed- and even he knows that he's got a much bigger heart than he has a brain. Still, he would see it as a good way of improving himself, and it's entirely possible that his peers may even mistake his simplicity for austere wisdom.
Element Preference:
•Earth may be something of an obvious choice given Chesnaught's typing, but on the other hand it also suits the humble simplicity of his nature and mindset; not to mention suggestive of a fortitude and capacity to thrive even under rugged circumstances.
•Light also becomes an appealing fit in consideration of a personality forged in kindness and supported by optimism, though it may be less recognizeable and more confusing to Chesnaught as a 'type'...
•Energy speaks less of body or heart and more of a certain natural knack common in Chesnaught's kind: boundless endurance and vitality. ...Even if the particulars of its evocation are a bit more pronounced in this world...
Anima Creature Description: Chesnaught's Anima Creature is a relatively small, almost overly-fuzzy white moth, with shades of soft pink down its antennae and a row of faintly seafoam markings across its wings.
Anima Traits: Much like Chesnaught, the little moth is curious to a point of often being blithely oblivious- unlike Chesnaught, however, it lacks the physical bulk to deal with the consequences if things go poorly. It's also a little bit on the friendly side-- well, clingy, really, and will often sit insistently on the head or shoulders of its partner or anyone else it finds particularly interesting... regardless of whether or not they're especially fond of insects. For the most part it's simply content to stay casually masted to Chesnaught's arm.
